Ancient Origins and Historical Significance

Founded in 928 A.D., Mapranam Church is one of India’s oldest churches. Deeply rooted in Kerala’s rich heritage, it has undergone centuries of transformation while preserving its Christian legacy. The church showcases cultural integration and stands as a living monument to over a millennium of faith, resilience, and tradition.

Unique Holy Relics

Mapranam Church houses three rare Holy Relics: the Holy Blood of Jesus, a piece of the Shroud of St. Veronica, and Jesus’ heart pierced by a lance. These were received from the Vatican in 1888, making it the only church in India with such relics, enhancing its spiritual significance.

Thiritheliyikkal – Candle Lighting Tradition

The church’s grand candle-lighting festival, Thiritheliyikkal, attracts over 300,000 devotees annually. Worshippers light beeswax candles matching their body weight as offerings. This unique ritual, held during the Exaltation of the Holy Cross feast, is unmatched globally and symbolizes divine intervention, religious harmony, and deeply personal acts of faith and hope.

Seelanthi – Carved Teak Beam

The 600-year-old Seelanthi, a carved teak beam, showcases exquisite woodcraft and cultural fusion. With motifs like dragons, lions, and parrots, it reflects artistic traditions and legends of healing. Donated by a grateful Brahmin, it symbolizes religious unity and stands supported by pillars from the Kollengode royal palace.

Artistic and Spiritual Architecture

Mapranam Church’s architecture blends Persian, Christian, and local Kerala influences. From its dragon-shaped pulpit to hidden sanctums with relics and historic documents, the structure speaks of ancient craftsmanship, spiritual symbolism, and interfaith respect. Every element is designed to promote harmony and invoke reverence among visitors of all faiths.

Community and Religious Harmony

The church fosters unity through inclusive practices, welcoming devotees of all religions. It hosts vibrant parish associations like the Legion of Mary and Jesus Youth. Activities span education, prayer, welfare, and charity, creating a cohesive spiritual community and setting a model for peaceful coexistence in a diverse society.
